FAQ

Q:What does the Department of Public Works handle for the Township of Lyndhurst and how many personnel are there?
A:The DPW is comprised of the following Departments:

  • The Water Department
  • The Sewer Department
  • The Street Department, which handles street sweeping, road repair and curb/sidewalk repair.
  • Shade Tree Department- which trims and plants trees and removes dead, diseased trees
  • The Mechanic Department- which performs all in-house servicing and maintenance on the DPW fleet.
  • The Recycling/Beautification Department- which performs any recycling which is not picked up at the street (i.e.) Pick up of old white goods (refrigerators, stoves, hot water heaters, washers and dryers), scrap metals, computers, electronic devices. This department is also charged with the daily emptying of streets-side trash receptacles, sidewalk litter and caring and watering of township plantings located on the street. Beside the individual departments, the DPW also oversees your Garbage and Recycling collection which is handled by outside contractors. There are 24 full-time members of the DPW and anywhere from 3-7 part-time workers- depending upon the time and season of the year.

Q:On which day are my curbside recyclables picked up?
A:Your recyclables are picked up on your street sweeper day. If you do not know you street sweeper day, please (click here) *Please note that one section of town has a different pick-up day than your sweeping day. Please take note of the referenced map.

Q:On which day is my garbage picked up?
A:Your garbage is picked up according to which section of town in which you live. To see you garbage collection days, please (click here).

Q:My sewer is backing up into my basement. Do I call a plumber first or call the DPW?
A: The Lyndhurst DPW is one of the only towns which offers stand-by sewer calls. If you call during working hours, you may call the office directly at 201-438-5478 (M-F; 7:30AM-4:30PM). If it is a weekend, holiday or after-hours, please contact the police desk at 201-939-2900. The Police Department will have the person assigned to Sewer Stand-by sent to your home within one or two hours. If it is determined that your problem is within your own sewer line (The line connecting your home with the main sewer line in the street), you may be responsible to secure your own plumber. However, in many cases, if the solution is simple enough- such as cleaning out your trap, you may not need to call a plumber. There is NO CHARGE for this service. (Please note: This service is only available for owner-occupied homes. Not available for apartment buildings or multi-family homes).

Q:My garbage or recycling was not picked up today. What do I do?
A: If, in the unlikely event, your garbage or recycling has been missed by the trucks, please call the DPW at 201-438-5478 (M-F; 7:30AM- 4:30PM) The DPW will contact the handler responsible and have your recycling or garbage picked up the following day.

Commissioner Haggerty Celebrates Arbor Day

Commissioner Brian C. Haggerty, along with members of the Department of Public Works Shade Tree Department, members of the Beautification Commission, residents and local school children gathered together at the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission for Lyndhurst´s annual Arbor Day Celebration. The event was sponsored by the Beautification Commission, The NJMC and the Lyndhurst DPW. The event included artwork drawn by Lyndhurst School children, a lecture on area trees and a walking tour of the trees given by NJMC Horticulturist Ian McDermott.

Household Battery Drop-Off

Commissioner Haggerty points to the new Household Battery drop-off shoot which was recently installed in front of the DPW entrance at 265 Chase Avenue. As part of Lyndhurst´s enhanced recycling initiatives, the shoot has been installed for residents to drop off their household batteries as an alternative to throwing them away in the garbage. Leaking battery acid pollutes our grounds and drinking water.  Commissioner Haggerty asks all residents to avoid throwing batteries away in the trash and to drop them into the shoot where the DPW will dispose of them at the BCUA Hazardous Waste Drop off facility.

LBC Fall Planting Event

The Lyndhurst High School student volunteers and their teacher, Mrs. Susan Cowell volunteered their time and effort assisting in the LBC Fall Planting. Susan Benson Secretary for the Lyndhurst Beautification Commission organized the planting event and under the direction of Tom DiMascio LBC Chairperson, and DPW Office helped make this a successful Fall Planting. Evelyn Pezzolla LBC Vice Chairperson spoke to the students on volunteerism and thanked all for their continued support to the community. Commissioner Brian Haggerty thanked everyone for their continued support to help keep the community clean and beautiful. Thank you to Centre Ridge Nursery of Nutley as they continue to give excellent planting advice to the Lyndhurst Beautification Commission.  Twenty six planters were filled with winter cabbage and winter ice pansies.
