2018 Budget Message

Public Affairs - Township Clerk - 6/13/2018 4:55:18 PM

Tonight, the Lyndhurst Board of Commissioners will be adopting a budget which holds the line on spending and taxes. Last year, 2017, the municipal portion of the tax levy decreased by 2.4 percent. This decrease was wiped out by an increase in the school and county tax levy. As such, the Lyndhurst tax payer saw a 2.2 percent increase in their 2017 tax bill. Still the Lyndhurst tax payer had a tax increase similar to the rest of New Jersey’s tax payers. We continue to have one of the lowest residential tax bills in the county and our taxes are lower than any adjoining town.

It is important to remember that the Board of Commissioners is responsible for only 41% of our tax bill. I have prepared a pie chart showing the distribution of our tax bill showing the school, county, library and town portion of the tax bill.

In 2018, the budget is increasing by 1.5 percent, or approximately $600,000. This includes an increase mandated by the state in library spending of approximately $61,000. In 2018 our taxes are estimated to increase for municipal purposes only by 1.1 percent.

This means that municipal taxes will be 1.3 percent lower than 2016.

The new Junior High School has been designed and bids completed and are ready to be received. Accordingly, to date, no financial impact has been felt from the new Junior High School. We are coming through the end of financing the EnCap debacle which caused Lyndhurst to incur over twenty million dollars of debt. I would like to thank the Board of Commissioners for their support of our fiscal programs and look forward to continued financial success in the future.

Commissioner of Finance
