Lyndhurst Department of Fire Prevention - Q & A on FIRE PITS
Posted September 24, 2025Over the past few months there have been questions on outdoor fire pits and Chimineas. There are several requirements that relate to the safe use of these devices.
We need to mindful of our neighbors that are also trying to enjoy the fall weather with opening of windows and doors. Smoke from fire pits can be offensive to some residents.
Below I have outlined the above requirements:
- Recreational fires are permitted only in a container approved or manufactured for such use, such as Chimineas or an outdoor fire place provided with a screen as these devices are designed to contain a fire. Fire drums, barrels or garbage cans are prohibited.
- Any recreational fire in an approved device shall be a minimum of 15’ from any structure, including outside decks, garages, and sheds. These devices shall never be located on top of any deck
- Only dry wood can be burned in these devices, live class A material like branches shrubs leaves are prohibited.
- Any excessive fire, such as fire burning out the top of the chimineas stack or through the screen of an outdoor fireplace is a violation as the device is not meeting the intent of containing the fire.
- Open burning that is offensive or objectionable because of smoke emissions or when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fire hazardous shall be prohibited.
- Any complaints of offensive smoke, reported by any neighbor will result in the owner to extinguish the fire immediately.
If any of the above conditions are occurring, contact the Police Department , for assistance.
