Considering recent e-bike incidents across New Jersey and growing safety concerns surrounding their use, the Lyndhurst Police Department, under the direction of Mayor & Public Safety Commissioner Robert B. Giangeruso and Chief Richard L. Jarvis, would like to share the following important information:

Under New Jersey law, no person under the age of 15 may operate a Class III e-bike, as these high-speed "motorized bicycles" require a valid driver’s license, registration and insurance. In addition, Class III e-bikes must be registered and insured, and all riders—regardless of age—are required to wear a helmet.

Failure to comply with these legal requirements can result in summonses and other legal consequences. Parents are ultimately responsible for ensuring their children follow traffic and safety laws. Unfortunately, we see many Class III e-bikes being operated by children as young as 10 years old, well below the legal age and without the necessary documentation.

Our Patrol Officers along with our School Resource Officers at both the high school and middle school are actively working to educate students about these laws, and we strongly encourage parents to reinforce this information at home.

If a violation is observed by a Lyndhurst Police Officer, the following actions will be taken:

• The e-bike will be removed from the roadway.
• Written/verbal warning(s) may be issued at first encounter. Repeat violators will be issued Summons(es).
• Summonses will be issued involving e-bike motor vehicle crashes
• Parents will be notified.

Our goal is not only to enforce the law but to protect the safety of all children and residents in our community. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping Lyndhurst safe.
