About the Bureau of Vital Statistics
The Bureau of Vital Statistics is conducted under the supervision of the Township Registrar. The Registrar’s office is required to see that all births, marriages, deaths and civil unions that take place within the Township of Lyndhurst are properly recorded, and filed locally and with the State Vital Statistic Office in Trenton. Certified copies of vital statistics records, marriage licenses, and burial permits are issued by this division.

As of Monday, October 21st, 2013, New Jersey marriages, civil unions, and same-sex marriages follow the same application process. The application is filed in the NJ municipality where either member of the couple lives. If neither member of the couple is a NJ resident, the application must be filed in the NJ municipality where the ceremony will occur. A witness, over the age of 18, must accompany the couple. An appointment is necessary. Appointments can be made by calling 201-804-2500. Please bring:

  • Identification: Please bring two forms of I.D. for each member of the couple. One of these must be a certified birth certificate. The witness must provide one form of I.D.
  • Proof of Lyndhurst residency: Provide for one member of the couple (or if both partners reside out of state, provide proof of current residency and the Lyndhurst location where ceremony will occur).
  • Legal Papers: Required if either partner has participated in a previous marriage/civil union/domestic partnership. Legal papers must be presented proving divorce or dissolution of civil union or domestic partnership.
  • Ceremony Information: Provide date and location of the marriage or civil union ceremony. Provide name (and his/her affiliation) of the person performing the ceremony.
  • License Fee: $28.00 in exact cash.
  • A waiting period of 72 hours is required before the license may be received. It is valid for 30 days from date of issue. If the marriage or civil union does not occur within that time period, a new application is required. There is no waiting period for remarriages.
  • The certified copy will be located in the municipality where the ceremony occurs. When the ceremony is held in Lyndhurst, the certified copy of the license is $10.00.

Certified copies of birth, death, marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships which occurred in Lyndhurst can only be provided by our Department.

Marriage licenses are taken by appointments. Please call (201) 804-2500 to make an appointment.
