Marriage & Civil Union Information

As of February 19, 2007, New Jersey marriages and civil unions follow the same application process. The application is filed in the NJ municipality where either member of the couple lives. If neither member of the couple is a NJ resident, the application must be filed in the NJ municipality where the ceremony will occur. A witness, over the age of 18, must accompany the couple. Please bring:

  • Identification: Please bring two forms of I.D. for each member of the couple. One of these must be a certified birth certificate. The witness must provide one form of I.D.
  • Proof of Lyndhurst residency: Provide for one member of the couple (or if both partners reside out of state, provide proof of current residency and the Lyndhurst location where ceremony will occur).
  • Legal Papers: Required if either partner has participated in a previous marriage/civil union/domestic partnership. Legal papers must be presented proving divorce or dissolution of civil union or domestic partnership.
  • Ceremony Information: Provide date and location of the marriage or civil union ceremony. Provide name (and his/her affiliation) of the person performing the ceremony.
  • License Fee: $28.00
  • A waiting period of 72 hours is required before the license may be received. It is valid for 30 days from date of issue. If the marriage or civil union does not occur within that time period, a new application is required.
  • The certified copy will be located in the municipality where the ceremony occurs. When the ceremony is held in Lyndhurst, the certified copy of the license is $7.00.
